Midnight Sun (Twilight Series, Edwards Version) by Stephenie Meyer

So Midnight Sun is Twilight form Edwards point of view. As you may know Stephenie Meyer was in the process of writing this book when it was illigally posted on the internet. She was so upset by this that she has stopped writing the book but has put the partial daft on her website.

I liked this installment better than Bella's version of the story. However that may only be because I have read the story from Bella's point of view and this fills in all of the blanks. And I really like that we get to hear everyones thoughts as Edward hears them. The incomplete draft has left me wanting more, I really hope Myers finishes the book,

Christmas Message & Actor Patrick Stewart

Sci-Fi Wire is reporting that actor Patrick Stewart - of Star Trek: The Next Generation and X-Men fame - may well be Knighted by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on New Year's Eve. That is so damned cool! (Btw, Christmas Message is at the bottom of this blog post.)

I've been a huge fan of Patrick Stewart's since I watched the 1980's movie, Dune and then on Star Trek: The Next Generation. The latter is where I truly saw him in action for a lengthy period and saw the range and talent he had.

His version of The Christmas Carol was a hoot to watch, and is one of my favorites. I try to watch it every Christmas, but, sometimes it isn't on. Maybe Netflix will have it available to watch on it's Instant Play. Then I can watch it on my PC with the ol' headphones on while folks are in the other room doing their talkin'. *snicker* Not that I'm a 'Scrooge', or anything. *whistles innocently*

All joking aside - I know, it's so difficult for me to do =P - he is definitely one of my top actors. Coming only after John Wayne, Charlten Heston, Clint Eastwood, Gary Cooper, and Cary Grant. Can you tell I watch really old movies? lol... *facepalm* Not that I don't watch a crap load of new stuff though. There are many actors and actresses I enjoy watching nowadays, but my memory sucks when it comes to names and it takes years for me to finally go, "hey! I know that actor's name!"

Anywho, here's the article:

Patrick Stewart—Star Trek's Capt. Jean-Luc Picard and X-Men's Charles Xavier—will be knighted by Queen Elizabeth II, according to a report in the British newspaper the Mirror.

In addition to appearing in films, Stewart has been spending much of the last decade performing on the British stage. He is to be knighted by the queen on this year's New Year's Honours list. (The news isn't official yet; the newspaper bases its report on anonymous sources.)
Palace sources said the Queen is a huge fan of the 69-year-old, who played Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation.
If he is knighted, Stewart will join fellow X-Men star Ian McKellen

Thought some of you may also be a fan, and might think this was cool as well.

On a more seasonal note, I want to thank those of you who actually read my blog. I truly do appreciate the fact that you find the stuff I post interesting enough, that you are willing to come here to read and participate. And I thank you.

Review: The Lost Regiment Series...

Down to the Sea, Book 1: A Novel of the Lost Regiment (Lost Regiment (Unnumbered))

I am now on the final novel in the Lost Regiment series, Down to the Sea. I've spent the last two months reading the nine novels of this series, and I've found I have fallen in love with them all over again.

In the first eight novels the story evolves around a fictional Civil War regiment, the 35th Maine Volunteer Infantry. We find them in the first novel boarding a troop transport, the Ogunquit, and setting out to sea to conduct an amphibious landing near a Confederatet fort - sorry, can't remember the name.

However, while enroute, they encounter a massive storm and the transport starts to founder. Most aboard think they are dead as they sea an extremely large wave heading towards them. The captain orders the ship to turn it's bow towards the wave in hopes of riding through it, but a light appears before the wave - growing larger by the second. It swallows the Ogunquit before the wave hits and they find themselves falling through a tunnel of light.

When they wake up, they are on a new world, Valennia, where they meet the Rus - descendents of ancient Russions. They make friends with them - although there is trouble with some factions within the Rus. Eventually, they learn of a race of non-humans called the Tugars. A race of beings that consider Humans to be cattle and feed upon them. When Colonel Keane - the commander of the 35th - found out, he was furious and disgusted that the Humans of this world could allow themselves to be lowered to such circumstances.

Many of the peasants see how the Yankees - the men of the 35th - are and wish to be like them and fight the Tugars. On the night Colonel Keane had ordered the vote to decide whether or not they would stay in Rus and fight, or leave until after the Tugars had moved on, the peasants revolt against the nobles. The fighting becomes desperate and Colonel Keane can't stand by and watch as innocent peasants are slaughtered by the nobles. So he ordered his regiment to fall in and said he was going to Sudzal - the capitol city of Rus - and help the peasants and if any of them wanted to come, it was their choice. But if they came, the entire regiment stayed for the duration.

Everyone volunteered to go to the aid of the peasants.

Fast forward to the eigth novel. Hans Schuder - the Sergent Major of the 35th Maine - is back from the dead, and the Republic - combining the States' of Rus and Roum - had decimated two seperate Hordes - the Tugars and the Merki - and now they are on the third, the Bantag. The new horde is more advanced than the previous two, and has created tanks - which they call land ironclads. Something the Republic didn't have in the beginning. The Republic eventually build their own tanks and the battle ensues. Eventually, Hans Schuder and Vincent Hawthorne come up with a plan they believe will end the war once and for all. A deep penetration rade into the rear supply lines of the Bantag Horde, and a plan to free the slaves there and arm them to fight. Thousands will die, but they will cause enough destruction to force the Bantag to capitulate.

Fast forward again, this time about twenty-five years for the Republic. They have had twenty-five years of peace, and Colonel Keane, is now the duly elected President of the Republic. Things are going well, but small problems are occuring which have President Keane's old war sense tingling. He sends out a ship to scout the seas to the south for information on the souther Horde, the Kazan. The ship - an armored cruiser - doesn't last a minute in a fire fight with one of the Kazan's smallest ships - a frigate. There were only two survivors, both aboard the scout plane the cruiser had launched a couple of hours before.

Will they make it home to the Republic? Will there be war? Well, I guess you'll have to buy the book(s) and find out, won't ya? =P

Over-all, I give this series a 7-out-of-10. It's a very fun read.

Colonel Barfoot Ordered to Take Down Flagpole...

Fox News posted an article back in November of this year regarding an elderly gentleman's fight with his Home Owners Association. His name is Colonel Barfoot, recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor, and a veteran of World War Two, Korea, and Vietnam. Here is the citation written for his Congressional Medal of Honor:

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty on 23 May 1944, near Carano, Italy. With his platoon heavily engaged during an assault against forces well entrenched on commanding ground, 2d Lt. Barfoot (then Tech. Sgt.) moved off alone upon the enemy left flank. He crawled to the proximity of 1 machinegun nest and made a direct hit on it with a hand grenade, killing 2 and wounding 3 Germans. He continued along the German defense line to another machinegun emplacement, and with his tommygun Mark VI tanks. From a distance of 75 yards his first shot destroyed the track of the leading tank, effectively disabling it, while the other 2 changed direction toward the flank. As the crew of the disabled tank dismounted, Sgt. Barfoot killed 3 of them with his tommygun. He continued onward into enemy terrain and destroyed a recently abandoned German fieldpiece with a demolition charge placed in the breech. While returning to his platoon position, Sgt. Barfoot, though greatly fatigued by his Herculean efforts, assisted 2 of his seriously wounded men 1,700 yards to a position of safety. Sgt. Barfoot's extraordinary heroism, demonstration of magnificent valor, and aggressive determination in the face of pointblank fire are a perpetual inspiration to his fellow soldiers. killed 2 and captured 3 soldiers. Members of another enemy machinegun crew then abandoned their position and gave themselves up to Sgt. Barfoot. Leaving the prisoners for his support squad to pick up, he proceeded to mop up positions in the immediate area, capturing more prisoners and bringing his total count to 17. Later that day, after he had reorganized his men and consolidated the newly captured ground, the enemy launched a fierce armored counterattack directly at his platoon positions. A Medal of Honor winner in a dispute over his right to fly the American flag in his yard will have another week before D-Day -- when he'll be forced to take down the Stars and Stripes or face legal action.

Ninety-year-old Col. Van T. Barfoot, a veteran of three wars, initially was given a 5 p.m. Friday deadline to dismantle his flagpole or face a legal battle over violating an order from his townhouse community association in Henrico County, Va.

John K. Honey, who is part of Barfoot's pro-bono legal team, said the homeowner association's board told him Thursday that it would push the date back a week to Friday, Dec. 11, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported.

"There's not going to be an announcement anytime this weekend," Honey told the paper. "We can all get some breathing room."

Barfoot, who fought in World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam, was told in July that he could not put up his freestanding flagpole in his Sussex Square neighborhood — but he installed it anyway.

On Tuesday, he says, he got a letter from the homeowners' association telling him the 21-foot pole he erected in September violates the community's aesthetic guidelines.

U.S. Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., has gotten involved in the dispute in the hopes of coming to a settlement.

"We intend to get to work right away to try to come up with a solution that’s acceptable to both Col. Barfoot and to the Homeowner’s Association," Warner's office said on his blog.

The American Legion also has joined Barfoot's fight.

"The association underestimated the fight left in this elderly veteran, and now they have to contend with the determination and persistence of Col. Barfoot's 2.5 million friends in The American Legion," National Commander Clarence E. Hill said in a statement.

But the homeowners' association defended their position, saying the issue wasn't Barfoot's right to fly the flag.

"This is not about the American flag. This is about a flagpole," the association said in a statement, insisting that Barfoot directly violated its board's July ruling.

"Col. Barfoot is free to display the American flag in conformity with the neighborhood rules and restrictions. We are hopeful that Col. Barfoot will comply."

Barfoot told the Times-Dispatch that he's faithfully displayed Old Glory every day since he served in the Army.

"There's never been a day in my life or a place I've lived in my life that you couldn't fly the American flag," he said.

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) – When Col. Van T. Barfoot raises the American flag, it's a special moment, in a life that's full of them.

“Just, one of the most beautiful things we've got on our side. It really is,” said Col. Barfoot.

In 1944, as a 25-year-old, he received the military's highest award: the Medal of Honor, for an act of heroism in World War Two. That makes him now, at age 90, a living legend.

To put that in perspective, when Col. Barfoot attends a Veterans Day service, he's the only one to receive a standing ovation. So when he was told that flying his American flag this way could lead to a fine of up to $10 a day, it was all so confusing.

“To tell me that I can't fly that now, after 90 years is a little bit, more than I can really just sit back and take it,” he said.

Colonel Barfoot and the homeowner's board where he lives are at odds. The by-laws don't permit flagpoles...most neighbors just attach flags to the front of their houses. But the colonel doesn't believe in flying the flag any other way. His daughter wrote the board, hoping for a one-time exception.

“I presented the one and only exception that I thought would never ever happen again, and that was having a Medal of Honor recipient living in this community,” said Margaret Nichols, Col. Barfoot’s daughter.

The request was politely denied. The colonel raised his flag anyway.

“That's my dad. Ha-ha. He's never run from a fight in the past and he’s not gonna run from this one,” said Margaret.

He says it will "stay" that way, for as long as he lives in the house.

“I feel that I’ve earned the right to have it fly...regardless of what they say,” said Col. Barfoot.

The board has thanked Col. Barfoot for his bravery and service to the country, but maintains that the flagpole is against a longstanding neighborhood policy. If the fines actually do come down, several other people have offered to pay them.

This brave man has served his country with honor, going above and beyond the call of duty to take the fight to the enemy, and to save those under his command. If he wishes to have a flagpole and fly the American flag each day, then by god let him do so. He has earned that right.

I am proud of this man who once stood up to Nazi Germany, North Korea, and the Viet Cong and basically told them to go do something with themselves. I've never been a fan of HOA's, they seem like little dictatorships to me, and therefore, I am hoping this brave soldier - and those standing with him - will kick this particular HOA's ass.

Thanksgiving is a time where we express gratitude for all the good things we have in life. If we look around, almost all religions emphasize on feeling thankful. Being thankful is not about being satisfied or not wanting more. Thankfulness shows your faith in God and starts a series of positive thoughts in your mind.

Ask any successful person, and they will agree that what you focus your mind on, increases in your life. By being grateful, we focus our mind on the good things we have in life and by doing this, we start attracting the more such things in our lives. If we do not have appreciation for what we already have, their value is reduced and those things leave us soon.

How much we achieve in our lives directly depends on how we feel about what we already have. For example, would you like to hire an employee who is constantly complaining about his current job? A person happy with his current job and looking ahead for better opportunities is more likely to be selected at a job interview. Sometimes, life is harsh on us and we tend to forget the things we have to be grateful for. It is our nature to take things for granted, specially when we have had them long enough.

This might be challenging, but is very much possible. And the results are miraculous!

Справедливости ради надо отметить, что Сергей Владимирович, выступавший первым и первым же покинувший высокое собрание, поторопился с выводами: народ постепенно подходил. (Ну не привыкли мы, чтобы мероприятия начинались в 8.45! По этому поводу вспоминается прошлогодний форум Ericsson в день открытия Mobile World Congress – он начинался если не в семь утра, то точно не позже восьми.) Для общения в формате коротких бизнес-контактов организаторы даже выделили специальное время (может быть, чтобы заполнить образовавшуюся паузу из-за отказа от участия в форуме ключевых докладчиков?).

Названия выступлений ключевых спикеров на форуме говорили даже не столько о том, кто есть кто в «Мире телекоммуникаций России и СНГ», сколько об устойчивости положения компаний. «Как укрепить лидерство на рынке связи в условиях кризиса» – это «Комстар», у которого нет валютных долгов. «Обеспечение естественного роста» – «Скай Линк», и трафик, и число подключений которого в январе 2009 г., несмотря ни на что, на 50% превысили показатели того же периода прошлого года. Скромненькое от МТС – «Найти местонахождение мобильного телефона ». Воздействие кризиса ощущается, говорит вице-президент по стратегии и развитию бизнеса МТС Майкл Хеккер, но на колени компанию не поставить.

Отрасль живуча

По самым разным исследованиям, кризис меньше всего повлияет на расходы населения на телефонную связь, которые в среднем в мире составляют 1–2% семейного бюджета. Так что наше место не такое плохое, подчеркивают операторы. Отток корпоративных клиентов будет компенсирован повышенным спросом на услуги фиксированной связи в массовом сегменте, которые наряду со спичками и солью входят в антикризисные запасы. Дискаунтер ощущает свою социальную роль – бизнес рассчитан на население, наиболее уязвимое в кризис: студентов и пенсионеров. По мнению Павла Аверкина (Поиск владельца по номеру сотового ), выигрывает не тот, у кого более высокие скорости и более протяженная сеть, а тот, кто знает путь к конечному пользователю. Это средние и мелкие компании, такие как домовые сети, локальные ISP и бизнес-центры, имеющие выход на конечного пользователя, однако ограниченные в финансах, кредитовании, более того, столкнувшиеся с угрозой потери бизнеса. При определенных условиях (наличие клиентской базы, возможность присоединения к сети «Ростелекома», не менее трех лет присутствия на рынке, стабильное экономическое положение) они могут стать virtual network operator (VNO). Себе «Ростелеком», с прошлого года реализующий модель выхода на рынок конечных пользователей, отводит роль host network operator (HNO) -- оператора опорной сети. Более того, он берет на себя и функции virtual network operator enabled (VNE) – интеграцию деятельности VNO и HNO: помогает снижать затраты VNO, организует аутсорсинг. Модель виртуального оператора фиксированной связи в мире не нова, в России она ассоциируется с бизнесом «Синтерры». Свой первый пилотный проект «Ростелеком» планирует реализовать в Москве, Екатеринбурге и Новосибирске.

Стать ближе к клиенту ставит своей целью и МТС, делающая акцент на монобрендовую сеть. Для оператора это особенно актуально, когда ближайший сосед по «большой тройке» («ВымпелКом») принял в свое хозяйство самую крупную ритейловую сеть («Евросеть»).

«Скай Линк» один из рецептов успеха видит в MVNO, интересной и для небольших мобильных операторов, и для крупных сетей. Однако при внешней простоте барьером на пути ее проникновения могут стать межоператорские расчеты. Кроме того, формулировки в законопроекте, который сейчас находится на рассмотрении в Министерстве юстиции РФ, подчеркивали участники форума, весьма расплывчаты и неконкретны.

Грибоедовым, а также правительственный деятель при Александре I.

Поскольку процесс формирования фамилий был достаточно длительным, окончательно говорить о точном месте и времени возникновения рода Шахназаровых можно лишь на основании глубоких генеалогических исследований. The Union Forever (Lost Regiment) (Book 2)

For the past couple of weeks, I have been working my way through The Lost Regiment series, and I was able to finish the second novel last week. I have read them all before, of course, but it has been several years since my last read through, and I was feeling nostalgic. So I thought, why not, eh?

In the second novel, the Yankees and Rus had already shattered the Tugar Horde in the first novel, which allowed the Roum - decendents of the old Romans to the east of Rus - to drive away what little remained of the Tugars. Sparing the Roum from having to give the Tugars two out of every ten of their citizens as food.

The Merki - the larger Horde of the same species as the Tugars to the South - learn that their ancient foe, the Tugars, had been defeated by the lowly cattle of the North. And the leader of the Merki Horde, Jubadi, has decided it is up to him and his Horde to put down the cattle that dared to rise up against the "Chosen Race".

Jubadi then summons Mutza - the Tugar Leader - to come before him to talk of what to do next. Jubadi now considers the leader of the broken horde to the north as his puppet. With most of the Tugar warriors dead, and the rest busy hunting to provide for the civilian population, Mutza is a leader with few choices. And Jubadi knows this, using it to force Mutza to do his bidding. With little choice in the matter, Mutza promises his two remaining Umens - equal to division size combat unit in the United States Army - to Jubadi in return for food.

There are plans within plans for both Mutza and Jubadi. Each wanting to protect his own, and see the other smashed.

However, for now, they are on the same side, and Jubadi shows Mutza what his cattle have been building for him. Two of the Yankees deserted and are now helping the Merki arm the Cartha - descendents of Carthage - with Civil War era weapons - cannon, ironclad ships, muskets, all the tools they believe they will need to wipe out those to the north.

Once armed, the Cartha sends a fleet of armed cattle to attack the city of Roum. No one is to know that it isn't the Cartha behind the attack, but the Merki. Things go according to plan at first. Cartha attacks Roum. Roum calls upon the Rus to send aid as per their military pact. Rus sends much of its army to Roum upon the recently built railroad.

Admiral Tobias Cromwell, the Yankee who deserted the previous year from Rus, leads the Cartha against Roum. Besieging the city of Roum for days, as the Rus Army force marches the rest of the way to Roum. When Cromwell learns that the Rus Army and his nemesis Colonel Keane are almost to the city, he pulls his forces out and proves how fragile an Army dependent upon a rail line truly is.

Cromwell sends a small force of a thousand men to tear up track and to turn rail into Sherman pins - that's where you heat the rail until it is white hot in the center, then rap it around telegraph poll. General Sherman did it on his campaign during the American Civil War.

Anyway, once the line was cut, the army was trapped 500 miles away from home with no way to get back as Admiral Cromwell and the Cartha move to take Rus by sea. Checkmate.

To find out what happens, you'll have to read the book. =P But, I highly recommend this series of novels for those who love a good yarn, military history, the American Civil War and its tactics, alternate history, and fiction. I don't think you'll regret reading these novels.
